For those of you that missed the event, I will attempt to make my first ever Tournament Report. So here we go.
UAE Regional 2008 started out as most of our events do.1 or 2 people playing a pick up game. I anticipated more pre-testing going on, but it seemed everyone new they were playing the deck to beat.
I was confident in my deck since I had been playing it on and off for about 5 weeks, tweaking it here and there to match the local Meta. I knew my deck had an issue running out of cards early so I threw in 2 Browbeats at the last minute to help get thing rolling a bit. Browbeat has always been a contentious card, but in my deck it usually means take 5 now, or take 10 in 2 turns¡...hmmm hard choice.
Round 1: UW Control
Game 1: opened up with perfect hand (land, creature, burn) fanatic beat down and held the board, Both Magus of Moon, and Scroll stabilized the board till the burn opened up. Quick game and fun opponent to play.
1-0
Game 2: perfect hand again, once again the fanatic beat down x2 till the board stabilized with the Magus¡¦s and the burn turn on. Finished with a Browbeat into full burn kill. To be fair my opponent had a deck that had 25 cards to many. We spent the rest of the time trimming the fat, and I think he got a lot out of the exercise.
2-0
Round 2: Fairies
Game 1: Once again fanatic played the creature control. Fairies were looking more like Mutavault swarm instead of flying swarm. Dropped Magus of the Moon early...gg.
1-0
Game 2: Boarded in the Vexing Shoosher and took it to the house. Fairy control cannot control, if my spells are uncounterable.
2-0
Round 3: Fairies...again
Game 1: I am pretty sure I lost this game.
0-1
Game:2 All I will say is Magus of the Moon FTW!
1-1
Game 3: I felt like it was almost unfair how my deck performs against control. Fairies tends to run to many utility lands and very few basics, so MoM tears the mana base apart and buys RG time to let the burn sink in¡Kand that¡¦s what happened here.
2-1
Round 4: Dragon storm
Game 1: ID
0-0
Playoffs:
Dave Dragon storm
Trevor RG Burn
Zak UB Control
Marc Fairies
Semifinals: Dragon storm
Game 1: Dismal start...I got Dragon Stormed out on turn 4...take 5, take 5, take 5, take 5 = gg
0-1
Game 2: Mulligan to 6 on the play...fanatics led the charge.A 3rd turn pop of DS players Hideaway land (revealing DS under it) beat down/burn into the win.
1-1
Game 3: Fanatic and burn to open up with. Magus dies early to a shock but he did his job. Beat down till the opponent was at 2 with fanatic x 2. DS starts to go off...BUT...not so fast, sack fanatics to the dome...gg
2-1
Finals: UB Control (Zak)
I really don¡¦t remember to much because it was late and well¡KI went out late the night before .
I do know that Colfangs Plans into creature control was Zaks plans. Anyone that has played Zak knows he is a very deliberate and calculating player. When playing against him you have to assume that he tapped the island on the right over the one on the left for a reason. I am almost positive I lost the first one. Either way it was a back and forth epic. Once again Browbeat and Vexing Shoosher + burn allowed me to take the match.
I had a great time at this UAE Unofficial Regional 2008. Olivier donated a couple awesome trophies and I am getting mine engraved with "to the dome!¨. I think that it is a fitting statement. Thanks to Paul for the prize support, and also a thanks to Wizards of the Gulf Coast forums for making this a reality. I was sorry to see Derek miss this event, but hopeful he can come for Nat¡onalss or Worlds.
